AtThe Khyber Pass Gallery was founded in 1980 as a “labor of love” by Sadiq Tawfiq in Laguna Beach, California. Born in Herat and educated at the University of Kabul, Tawfiq is an Afghan-American who is grateful for the opportunities he found in America. He has combined his love of art, history, and Afghan and Persian culture into a business that benefits these cultures and enriches that of the US.

“Both my grandfather and father were well-known merchants in Afghanistan dealing with handwoven rugs and Kashmir wool, pistachio, almond resins, and more. They instilled in me a vast knowledge of our country’s culture and a great appreciation of its tribal art and handmade items. Particularly, I have developed a deep love for the beautifully handwoven area rugs that are still handwoven by families today using traditional methods and designs that are more than 4,000 years old.”

A tribal art expert, Tawfiq strongly believes and is passionate about the power of art to help build bridges of cultural understanding and peace. He regularly lectures at schools and universities and has served as a technical advisor on movies such as Rambo III and Three Kings, as well as acting as an advisor and designer for park teams here in the US.

We’ve Been Building Up To This For Generations

For centuries, some of the best examples of Eastern and Western culture have flowed through Afghanistan’s silk road through Herat City. Countless caravans and their priceless cargoes helped endow the area’s indigenous tribal peoples with a wondrously rich cultural heritage. It is reflected in their remarkable handmade textiles, jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other works of art such as the very fine Baluch, Uzbek and Turkman rugs of many different designs and colors. The geographical Khyber Pass is a part of the ancient silk road and a pathway through mountains that connects Pakistan and Afghanistan. Today, however, there is another Khyber Pass linking the East and West.

The Khyber Pass Gallery of Southern California currently operates a showroom in Laguna Beach offering an enchanting range of authentic tribal art. It features various woven art including pile rugs, wool rugs, kilim rugs, and silk rugs, as well as pillow cases, tribal salt bags, and needlework suzanis.

The showroom also features collectible jewelry such as Turkman, Kochi, and Afghan Lapis Lazuli beads, necklaces, bracelets, cornelian and pendent rings. Our line of accessories includes musical instruments, special ceremonial clothing such as chapman and dress, china, collectible stone antiques and coins, beads, historical glasses and bottles, clay works, woven fabrics, art from Western Asia and the Far East, and more. With new handwoven rugs, unique and fine crafts always arriving your visit is certain to be rewarded with something of surprising beauty and charm.

 You’ve Found “The Genuine Article”

Unlike stores that come and go with the latest fashion or hi-tech gadgets, The Khyber Pass Gallery has been trusted resource for handmade, original crafts for nearly a quarter of a century. Each one-of-a-kind work of art offered by The Khyber Pass Gallery is, in short, “the genuine article” and not simply the latest output from an automated assembly line or a cheaply made imitation produced by an offshore factory. Instead, everything we offer at The Khyber Pass Gallery is handmade by highly skilled tribal artisans who still proudly, patiently and expertly employ traditional techniques that are, in many cases, centuries old and with rich stories and meaning behind them, Therefore, nearly every item at The Khyber Pass Gallery is sold with its own Certificate of Authenticity.

We try our best to bring not only exceptional value to our customers through our merchandise, but most significantly, to bring our customers a rich ancient cultural history. We are happy to serve you with our knowledge, wisdom, expertise and excellent customer service that we have offered our customers both locally and worldwide here in Laguna Beach since 1980.
